In 2016, the City of Asheville, Buncombe County, and Duke Energy came together in a unique partnership to lead Western North Carolina to a cleaner, affordable, and smarter energy future.  A specific goal of the partnership is to delay or avoid construction of a third natural gas plant on Lake Julian that would on run on the coldest and hottest days of the year: called a peaker unit.
